When John Adams wrote a letter to his wife about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, he said future celebrations of the great day "...ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more."  He didn't include cookies, but we think he might have liked these.
